Message hands on experience, you can pass. Thats the way I've got 3 at the age of 18. All I did was study the week before with my text book, and then during the test, think back to different cars i've worked on and/or apply a little bit of logic. I've taken and passed Brakes, Steering and Suspension, and Electricity/Electronic, and am about to go back to take Engine Performance. To actually become certified you must have 2 years of experience. What this means is that w/o the experience, you just get to say you passed the tests, but you're still not technically certified.

Also, there's 8 different fields for the tests, and the only test you'd have to remember anything about motor tear downs would be engine repair, and from my understanding, its a test more of clearance standards or any other standards for common measurements (angle of cross hatching and other stuff like that)

The tests are cheap, so if i were you, i'd talk to the boss and see if he'll reimburse you if you pass the tests.

Good luck.
